The vehicles involved were a black Scattante SL3 road bicycle, which was westbound on 28th Street and a blue 2009 Nissan Altima four door sedan, which was northbound on Fortuna Road. Initial investigation at the scene revealed the bicycle failed to stop at the posted stop sign on 28th Street and Fortuna Road. As a result, the bicycle struck the right front passenger door of the Nissan. Both vehicles came to rest on the roadway of Fortuna Road.
The bicycle was being operated by Mr. Francis Alexander Johnston, a 74 year old male from British Columbia, Canada, who was wearing a helmet at time of the collision. Mr. Johnston was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center via Rural Metro Fire Ambulance and later transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital via CareFlight. His injuries consisted of an ankle fracture, scapula fracture, a facial fracture, and minor bleeding of the brain. Mr. Johnston is in serious but stable condition.
The blue Nissan was being operated by Ms. Roxana Martinez, a 26 year old female from Yuma, Arizona. Martinez suffered no injuries.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation; however, alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision.
