On December 4, 2013, at approximately 7:11 a.m., the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office responded to Dateland Elementary School in reference to a 10 year old child being run over by a school bus.
Upon arrival, deputies were informed that a 10 year old child ran alongside the school bus attempting to catch it before it departed from the bus stop in the 14000 Block of N. Avenue 74E in Hyder. The bus driver did not see the victim running alongside the bus and inadvertently ran him over. The victims’ brother saw him on the road, picked him up and took him home. The grandparent then took the child to Dateland Elementary School knowing that a paramedic was stationed there.
Tri-Valley Ambulance responded to the school and requested that a Care Flight ambulance to be launched. The victim was flown directly to a Phoenix area hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
The bus driver was not aware that she had run over the child and continued her bus route. She was advised of the incident upon her arrival to Dateland Elementary School. The incident has been ruled an accident and no citations will be issued.
The name of the victim will not be released due to the fact that he is a juvenile.
