Scams

Location of Incident: Yuma County, AZ

On December 26, 2013, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office received numerous calls in reference to a scam that was occurring throughout Yuma County. Reporting parties told Deputies that they had received a telephone call from an unknown suspect who was claiming to be a Captain or Lieutenant with the Sheriff’s Office warrant division. The suspect would inform the victims that they have a warrant for their arrest for a ticket they received on a photo-radar. The suspect would then explain to the victims that they missed their court date and had to pay a fine or be arrested.

The suspect is instructing the victims to purchase a Green Dot money card, place a certain amount of money on the card and have the victim call them back once they completed the process. Once on the phone the suspect will request the Green Dot money card number from the victim and remove the money from the card.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind you that we will not request payments or credit card information and will not provide any warrant information over the phone to the public. If you believe you have been a victim or have received any of these calls you are asked to contact your local law enforcement agency.
