Location of Incident: 8200 block of Avenue D, Yuma , AZ
On 4/5/13, Sheriff’s Office investigators positively identified the deceased as Joaquin Gastelum, 42, of Yuma. Next of kin was notified.
The Pima County Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be accidental due to head trauma and a broken neck sustained during Gastelum’s fall into the canal. It was determined that Gastelum had ridden a bicycle into a small canal located at Avenue D and Poppy Street. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the accident.
Yuma County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a possible drowning in the 8100 block of Avenue D where a Hispanic adult male subject was found deceased. The deceased was found wearing all black clothing and is believed to have been on a bicycle. The cause of death is unknown at this time and the case is currently under investigation.
