Phone Scams

Location of Incident: Yuma County, AZ

On Wednesday, March 26, 2014, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office received numerous calls in reference to a scam that is occurring throughout Yuma County. Reporting parties told Deputies that they had received a telephone call from an unknown suspect who was claiming to be a Captain or Lieutenant Willis (one of the names reported that is being used) with the Sheriff’s Office. The suspect would inform the victims that they had missed jury duty and a warrant would be issued for their arrest if they did not pay a fine.

The suspect is instructing the victims to purchase a Green Dot money card, place a certain amount of money on the card and have the victim call them back once they completed the process. Once on the phone the suspect will request the Green Dot money card number from the victim and remove the money from the card.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that:

If you believe you have been a victim or have received any of these calls, you are asked to contact your local law enforcement agency.
