Lieutenant Michael Cooper joined the Sheriff’s Office as a Detention Officer on October 5, 2015. He graduated from Detention Officer Basic Training Academy #82, where he received the Academy’s “Academic Excellence Award” for the highest academic average.
During his first year with the Detention Bureau, Cooper rotated through various custody levels within the jail to include Maximum Security Units and Internal Transport where he served as Team Leader. In 2016, Cooper was assigned to the Detention Bureau’s Support Section as a Classification Officer. In 2017, he transitioned his knowledge and investigative skills to the Detention’s Investigation Section.
On December 31, 2017, Cooper was promoted to the rank of Senior Detention Officer. With his new promotion, he assumed the responsibility of supervising the Detention Center’s Admitting Area, which included Booking, Processing and Master Control.
On November 11, 2018, Cooper was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and rotated back to the Detention Bureau’s Custody Section where his duties expanded as a supervisor on the Mid Watch. He served in that position until his promotion to Detention Lieutenant on May 11, 2020. Upon his promotion, Lieutenant Cooper was assigned as the Detention Bureau’s Custody Lieutenant.
In July 2022, Lt. Cooper transitioned to the Administrative Services and Investigations position where his areas of responsibility include billing and contract services; Classification and Investigations; facility maintenance; and OPR/CSCR services. Lt. Cooper also oversees the Critical Incident Response Team.
Prior to joining the Sheriff’s Office, Lieutenant Cooper worked in a correctional setting for ten years where he gained experience at different supervisory levels. Lieutenant Cooper brought his vast experience to the Yuma County Detention Center and over the years, he has contributed innovative ideas that enhanced the efficiency of the Detention Bureau. He received recognition for his contributions as the 2016 and 2019 recipient Innovator of the Year Award.
Lieutenant Cooper also received Arizona State Fire Fighter and Emergency Medical Technician Certifications prior to joining the Sheriff’s Office.
Lieutenant Cooper enjoys family time and any outdoor lifestyle such as hunting, fishing and camping.
