Lieutenant Sonny Hixon joined the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office on October 21, 2002, after serving 8 years in the United States Marine Corps as a Utilities Electrical Engineer and putting himself through the Arizona Western Collage Law Enforcement Training Academy while still serving on active duty.
Hixon worked as a Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office until he was assigned to the Community Oriented Policing (C.O.P.) Unit from February 2004 until July 2005. During this time, Hixon also worked with and assisted the Yuma County Narcotics Task Force (YCNTF) and YCSO Criminal Investigations Bureau (CIB).
In 2008, Hixon was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau as an Investigator until 2011. During his time with the CIB, Hixon worked on various cases ranging from property crimes, assaults, sex offenses, to violent crimes.
On July 21, 2015, Hixon was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned as a Patrol Supervisor. Hixon was also tasked with overseeing the Sheriff’s Office Field Training program and ensuring that newly hired Deputies were prepared to effectively work with and serve the citizens of Yuma County.
In September 2019, Hixon was assigned to the YCNTF where he served as the Supervisor of the multi-agency unit until February of 2022.
In 2022, Hixon was assigned as a Duty Supervisor in the West County, where he acted as a liaison, assisted citizens within Yuma County, organized illegal dumping clean-up events, attended and worked with community block watch groups, and worked with local schools conducting community service projects.
On February 2, 2025, Hixon was promoted to his current rank of Lieutenant and was assigned as the East County Supervisor. He also oversees the Boating Safety & Enforcement Unit (Boat Patrol), the Office of Professional Responsibility, the Underwater Search & Recovery Team, and the Critical Collision Investigations team.
