Deputy/Reserve Deputy & Detention Officer Application Process
The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office Human Resources Department conducts all the testing, interviewing and notifications for Sheriff’s Office employment only. It is the policy of the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office to conduct entry level testing to establish an eligibility list for all positions within the department. The following information pertains to the positions of Deputy, Reserve Deputy and Detention Officer applications only.
Applications
- Applications must be filled out completely.
- All Yuma County applications must be submitted online through NeoGov. To apply online, click buttons below.
- Sheriff’s Office Human Resources will receive all submitted applications from the County HR Department.
- Sheriff’s Office Human Resources will screen all applications to determine the most qualified applicants for each position.
- Upon completion of the screening process, the selected applicants will be notified by email of testing date, time and location. NOTE: Testing is scheduled on an “as needed” basis.
Testing
Written Exam: All applicants must successfully pass a general aptitude written examination with a score of 70% or better to continue in the testing process. The written examination covers basic spelling, word usage and meaning, reading, comprehension, basic math, and law enforcement questions. Physical Fitness Test: Upon passing the written exam, applicants must participate in a physical fitness evaluation consisting of 99-yard obstacle course, a 500-yard run, body drag (165-pound dummy), and scaling 6-foot chain link and solid fence (Deputy & Reserve Deputy applicants only).

Candidate Selection Procedure
Applicants passing the written and physical fitness evaluation will be provided with a background packet.
Detention Officer: The top applicants will be scheduled for a tour of the Detention Center. If selected to continue, an interview will be scheduled.
Deputy Sheriff: The top applicants will be scheduled for a panel interview with the Patrol Command Staff.
If selected for hire, the applicant will undergo a drug test, physical exam, polygraph exam and a social networking review. The remaining applicants will be placed on a one (1) year eligibility list. Applicants may re-apply for positions under future recruitment announcements.
Eligibility List
Applicants that have successfully completed the required entry level testing procedures, but were not hired under the current recruitment will be placed on a one (1) year eligibility list.
Applicants may be eligible for future consideration either by:
- A future referral from this eligibility list, or
- Reapplying for this position under a future recruitment announcement.
