Mel Greenleaf ran for the office of Sheriff of Yuma County in the November 8, 1892 election, defeating the Republican nominee E. B. Wagy. He started his first 2-year term as Sheriff on January 1, 1893.
Greenleaf ran for re-election in the November 6, 1894 election and defeated opponents B. A. Haraszthy (Rep) and Samuel S. Gillespie (People's Party). He started his second 2-year term as Sheriff on January 1, 1895.
Greenleaf ran for re-election in the November 3, 1896 election and defeated opponents Frank Ingalls (Rep) and M. L. Pool (People's Party). He started his third 2-year term as Sheriff on January 1, 1897.
Greenleaf ran for re-election in the November 8, 1898 election and was defeated by the Republican nominee John M. Speese.
