Andrew Tyner was appointed Sheriff of Yuma County by the Board of Supervisors on July 3, 1878, to fill the vacancy upon the resignation of William A. Werninger. Tyner had served as Undersheriff, having been appointed by Sheriff (Dr.) Francis H. Goodwin in April 1873. Tyner had also run for the office of Sheriff in the November 7, 1876 election; however, he was defeated by incumbent William A. Werninger.

Election - November 5, 1878
In October 1878, having been appointed by county supervisors, Tyner announced his bid for the office of Sheriff. Tyner defeated challenger Ira Buffum in the election held on November 5, 1878 election. Tyner started his first elected 2-year term as Sheriff on January 1, 1879.

On July 12, 1880, Tyner submitted his resignation as Sheriff to the Board of Supervisors. His resignation was accepted and the office was declared vacant. The Board of Supervisors immediately appointed Francis M. Hodges to fill the vacancy in the office of Sheriff of Yuma County for the unexpired term through December 31, 1880.

Appointment to Sheriff
On June 7, 1881, Sheriff Francis M. Hodges submitted his resignation as Sheriff to the Board of Supervisors. Tyner was immediately appointed by the Board of Supervisors to fill the vacancy for Hodges’ unexpired term through December 31, 1882.

Election - November 7, 1882
Having been appointed by county supervisors, Tyner ran for the office of Sheriff in the November 7, 1882 election. Tyner defeated opponent J. C. McDougall and started his new 2-year term as Sheriff on January 1, 1883.

Election - November 4, 1884
Tyner ran for re-election in the November 4, 1884 election and defeated opponent H. H. Douglas. He started his new 2-year term as Sheriff on January 1, 1885.

Election - November 2, 1886
Tyner ran for re-election in the November 2, 1886 election, however, he was defeated by opponent Michael J. Nugent.
