On September 26, 1864, William A. Werninger was appointed Sheriff for Yuma County (Second Judicial District) by Arizona Territory Governor John N. Goodwin to replace Isaac A. Bradshaw who resigned. Werninger was the first Sheriff appointed after the creation of the original four counties of the Arizona Territory. He served as Sheriff until November 9, 1864.

Election - November 3, 1874
In September 1874, Werninger announced himself as an Independent candidate for the office of Yuma County Sheriff. He defeated the incumbent Sheriff, Dr. Francis H. Goodwin, and Thomas Hughes (Independent) in the November 3, 1874 election. On January 1, 1875, Werninger took office as Yuma County Sheriff.

On April 12, 1875, the Yuma County Board of Supervisors ordered that Werninger be appointed special superintendent of the territorial prison.

Election - November 7, 1876
In August 1876, Werninger announced his bid for re-election. He was re-elected as Sheriff in the November 7, 1876 election, defeating challenger Andrew Tyner. Werninger started his second (elected) term in January 1877.

On July 3, 1878, Werninger resigned his position as Sheriff. Andrew Tyner was appointed by the Yuma County Board of Supervisors to fill the vacancy.
