Training Department
The Training & Educational Services Department is committed to ensuring that all employees of the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office meet and maintain the highest standards of knowledge, skill, and proficiency necessary to achieve those endeavors which have been entrusted by the Sheriff and the citizens of Yuma County. Initial and in-service training is provided to all employees of the Administration, Patrol, and Detention Bureaus to include all sections within.
The Training & Educational Services Department also assists the Human Resources Department in conducting recruitment and hiring of all employees. In addition, the Training Department attends all job fairs and special events within the community.
Certified Peace Officers
All peace officers are required to complete an eight hundred (800) hour state accredited training academy as mandated by state law and the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST). Following completion of the training academy, all deputies receive a minimum of five hundred and twenty (520) hours of field training with the department prior to assuming duty as a “solo” patrol officer. To maintain full-authority peace officer certification, all deputies must complete a minimum of eight (8) hours of continuing training per calendar year, eight (8) hours of proficiency training every three (3) years, and successfully complete all annual firearm qualifications as mandated by AZPOST. In addition to these minimal standards, to maintain full-authority of a peace officer, all deputies must complete a minimum of twelve (12) hours of training per calendar year. Special duty assignments and teams may require additional training.
Certified Detention Officers
All certified detention officers are required to complete a two hundred eighty (280) hour
basic training academy. In addition, all certified detention officers are required to complete eight (8) hours of in-service training per calendar year. Special duty assignments and teams may require additional training.
Civilian Employees
All civilian employees assigned to either the Patrol, Detention, or Administration Bureau receive hands on field training upon their initial assignment within their specific section. All employees are encouraged to seek professional development training which they feel will benefit them as well as the department. Additional training is mandated as required by department policy, county policy, and OSHA. Special duty assignments and teams may require additional training.
